Esther (Niehoff) Sorenson, 100, of Glasgow passed away January 9, 2017 at Valley View Home in Glasgow.
A Rosary will be prayed Friday, January 13 th at 6:00 p.m. at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2017 at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church with Father Jose Valliparambil and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Glasgow. Esther was born November 1, 1916 in Glentana, Montana to William and Mary (Suek) Niehoff. She attended school in Glentana and graduated in 1934 from Opheim High School. She earned her teaching degree from the College of Great Falls where she was also in the first graduating class. She taught school for forty years in Glentana, Richland, Opheim, Libby, Scobey, Kalispell and Glasgow.
She married Clifford Halvorson in December 1943. Clifford passed away in April of 1945. She later married Lloyd Sorenson in January 1956. The couple made their home in Glentana for a few years before moving to Glasgow in 1961.
Esther was a member of St. Raphael’s and Retired Teachers. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and traveling. She was also known as a good cook.
Esther is survived by four nieces, Kathleen (Ron) Hilbig of Great Falls, Margaret (Kenny) Pollington of Helena, Joan O’Donnell of Helena and Suzanne Bloomquist of Spokane; nephews Walt (Martha) Niehoff Jr. of Seattle and Bill (Debbie) Niehoff of Helena; brother, Walter Niehoff of Helena; and three step-children, Harold Sorenson, Marjorie Tankin and Linda Gruver; and special neighbors, friends and caretakers, Kim & Norm Girard and Betty & Melvin Vegge.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Clifford Halvorson and Lloyd Sorenson; parents, William “Bill” and Mary Niehoff; sisters, Julie Niehoff and Leona O’Brien; and niece Elaine O’Brien Kling.
