Kathryn Marie (Hess) Cherney, 88, of Nashua/Glasgow, passed away of natural causes at FMDH in Glasgow on Friday, September 4, 2015. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bell Mortuary.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 9, at 2:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Glasgow with Pastor Bonnie Novak officiating. A luncheon will follow. Burial of ashes will take place privately with family. Memorials may be made to Nemont Manor in Kathryn’s name. Condolences may be left at bellmortuarymontana.com.
Kathryn was born to Allen and Hazel (Shirk) Hess on April 10, 1927 in Poplar, Montana, and was the oldest of four girls. She attended grade school north of Brockton and graduated from Poplar High School in 1946. She graduated college from Havre with a teaching degree.
While Kathryn was teaching school in Nashua, she met Joyce Cherney. The couple married June 7, 1953 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Brockton, Montana. In the fall of 1953, Kathryn and Joyce moved to the homestead farm where they lived until they bought a house in Nashua in 1988. They were blessed with four children: Terrence, Darrell, Jodeen, and Dayton. They lived in Nashua until 2005 when they moved to Nemont Manor in Glasgow. Joyce and Kathryn were happily married for 53 years.
Kathryn’s life revolved around her family, children, grandchildren and her strong Christian faith. She enjoyed cooking and was known throughout the community for her Halloween popcorn balls. She belonged to Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Nashua and later attended services at First Lutheran Church and the Nemont Manor in Glasgow.
Kathryn is survived by her son, Dayton (Liz) Cherney of Sidney; her granddaughters, Alysha (Justin) Korpi, and Katie Johnson of Spokane, WA; grandson, Waylon (Ceci Campagna) Poland of Seattle; Alysha and Katie’s mother, Mary Goodell of Dutton; and sisters, Hazel Gruys of Albuquerque, NM and Velma Savoie of Newberry, CA; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family.
Kathryn is preceded in death by her husband, Joyce; her daughter, Jodeen; sons, Terrence and Darrell; and sister, Audrey (Hess) Larson.
